Importance of Alkaline Body pH

This article explores the importance (if any) of Alkaline body pH.


pH is a scientific measure which the potential of hydrogen, which is the measure of hydrogen ions in an aqueous solution.

While pH is a logarithmic measure of molar concentration, it is generally denoted as whole figures, i.e. from 1 through 14.

Solutions with a pH less than 7 are Acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are Basic or Alkaline.

Pure water is neutral, at pH 7 (25 °C), being neither an acid nor a base. Contrary to popular belief, the pH value can be less than 0 or greater than 14 for very strong acids and bases respectively

Physiologically speaking, your body is designed to operate in a healthy way within a narrow pH- range around 7.365 which is slightly alkaline.

Why Alkaline Body pH

Did you know that pH affects your health in all sorts of ways?

Every different body fluid is different and has a different pH to create motion and movement, for example, the pH fluid in our stomach is different than the  fluid in our blood, and so is the sweat different than the fluid in our blood and brain.

Some medical studies reveal that an unbalanced pH can be correlated with health problems such as heart disease and cancer.

Alkaline body pH creates balance in the tissues. And if you do not feel as energetic as you are, it’s time to check your pH level.

Blood pH vs Tissue pH

  • Since blood is your body’s most vital performing organ, reaching every cell of every tissue, your body is designed to maintain the blood pH at 7.365 under all conditions.
  • However the pH in the various tissues could move up or down (acidic or alkaline) depending on physiological need (like digestion) or pathological condition (like cancer).

Broadly speaking, since your body is tuned to work best at a slightly higher or Alkaline pH, it is recommended to try to support it by maintaining a slightly Alkaline lifestyle.

Excess Acidic stimulus, by way of consuming more pre-processed foods & sugars, lack of rest & exercise, air and water pollution, or chronic psychological stress – has the potential to create chronic Acidosis in your tissues, which is associated with Degenerative Metabolic diseases ranging from Diabetes, Heart & Kidney disease to Cancer.

If the pH of your cells becomes too acidic, your cell system will soon be affected by toxic waste, which will lead to cell death. If your body contains more acid, you will probably experience symptoms of anxiety, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, insomnia, nervousness, digestive problems, etc.

What Happens When Your Body is too Acidic?

When the body is suffering from the high acidic levels, there are different kind of diseases in the body that attack us

  • Shortness of breath
  • Yeast fungal overgrowth
  • Low energy and chronic fatigue
  • Increased heart rate

Can Your Body be Too Alkaline?

Contrary to popular belief, your body can also go into Alkalosis.

However since you are operating with a slightly Alkaline machine (your body) in an environment loaded with Acidic stimulus, Alkalosis is a very rare phenomenon, mostly caused by long periods of vomiting or over-use of diuretic medicines.

More health problems are likely to befall you with your tissues being “acidic,” closer to 7.3 or lower, than “alkaline” or 7.40, since a slightly alkaline pH that falls within the normal range can be beneficial to your health.

Symptoms of Alkalosis

  • Twitching of muscles
  • Increase urination
  • Increase irritability
  • Light-headedness
  • Tremor in hand
  • Muscle spasm

Ways to balance your pH

In general, alkalinity measures the ability of each solution to neutralize acids to equivalent carbonates. For the human body, however, a pH of 7.4 must be maintained, which is alkaline. Its ability to combat acids measure the alkalinity of each solution.

Conscious of nutrition and diets, alkaline diets rich in fruits and vegetables are becoming increasingly important. It is thought that alkaline water is beneficial for hydration and helps to eliminate toxins from your body. It is also thought that you need to restore the right amount of pH in your body.

If you’re a health conscious individual like me, you’ve probably heard about the importance of alkaline water. Its proponents state alkaline water’s many benefits including neutralizing acid in your bloodstream, improving the body’s ability to absorb nutrients effectively, increase energy levels, and even fight cancers. These are only a few of the myriads of benefits that drinking this type of water has.


It’s important to note the distinction here. Alkaline water is not necessary filtered water, and filtered water is not necessarily alkaline water. Watch for these claims carefully because some claim to do both when they don’t, so read the labels carefully.
